관계대명사나관계부사가유도하는 절은 그 앞에 었는 선행사를 수식하기 때문에 형용사절이라고 한다.

(1) 관계대명사의 제한적 용법

The man who is working on the farm is my uncle.

〔

The man whom I like very much is taller than I.

I have a friend whose father is a poet.

(I have a friend. His father is a poet.)

Bring me the book whose cover is blue.

=Bring me the book of which the cover is blue.

=Bring me the book the cover of which is blue.

(Bring me the book. Its cover is blue.)

(=The cover of the book is blue.)

(2) 관계대명사의 계속적 용법

They had two daughters who became nurses.

〔딸의 수는 둘 이상〕

They had two daughters, who became nurses.

〔딸의 수는 둘〕

He said nothing which (or that) made me angry.

(그는 나를 화나게 만드는 말은 아무말도 하지 않았다.)

He said nothing, which made me angry.

(=He said nothing, and it made me angry.)

(그는 아무말도 하지 않았는데, 그것이 나를 화나게 만들었다.)
