Lesson 8. Lessons from The King's Speech
Prince Albert, known to his family as Bertie, became the king of England in 1936. It was not what he wanted, but thereafter he was known as King George VI. Cursed from childhood with a terrible stammer, he struggled painfully in public until his wife convinced him to seek the help of Lionel Logue, an Australian speech therapist. King George overcame his stammer, found his voice, and became one of England’s most beloved kings.
The king’s disability was the subject of the movie The King’s Speech. The five lessons described below, taken from the film, are useful tips on how we can all communicate better. With lessons from King George, you can be transformed into a capable public speaker!
Have faith in your voice.
As a child, young Bertie was both teased and ignored by the powerful men in his family. Growing up, his stammer became worse because he believed he didn’t have a voice. Just as many beginning speakers struggle to get their words out, Bertie had to overcome a lack of faith in himself. Just as the crown was given to Bertie at an early age, you too will have your moment to shine. The question is: Will you have faith in yourself and in what you are saying? The secret here is to persist.
Bertie: What are you doing? Get up!
Lionel: I’m tired.
Bertie: You can’t sit there!
Lionel: Why not? It’s a chair.
Bertie: It’s the chair upon which every King for six and a half centuries has been crowned.
Lionel: I don’t care how many royal backsides have sat on it, it’s a building block with handles attached.
Bertie: Listen to me ...
Lionel: Listen to you? By what right?
Bertie: Divine right, if you must! I’m your King!
Lionel: No, you’re not! You said you didn’t want it. So why should I listen to a poor stammering fellow who can’t put one word after another? Why waste my time listening to you?
Bertie: Because I have a right to be heard!
Lionel: Heard as what?
Bertie: A man! I HAVE A VOICE!
Lionel: (quietly) Well then... you’re cured.
Admit you need help.
Bertie was willing to admit he had a problem. His success was largely due to one man: an Australian speech therapist, Lionel Logue. The young king could have been consumed by his ego, but instead was open to the support of his wife Elizabeth and to being trained by Lionel. Lionel helped Bertie overcome his speech problem, turning him into a great king. No one can become a great presenter by himself/herself. A person needs to let go of his ego, reach out, and be open to criticism. Remember, though, that you are only as great as the people close to you. Find your own Lionel and Elizabeth.
Put the hours in.
At first the young king was convinced that his stammer could not be fixed. It was not until he threw himself into Lionel’s exercises that he was able to progress. There is no substitute for hard work. You have to roll up your sleeves and put in the hours to get to where you want to be.
Bertie: “In this grave hour...” Sorry.
Lionel: Try again.
Bertie: Lionel, I can’t do this!
Lionel: Take it from the top. “In this grave hour...”
Bertie: (hesitates, then) “In this grave hour, p-p-perhaps...”
Lionel: Go on...
Bertie: The letter ‘p’ is always difficult.
Lionel: Get a running start, put the words all together. ‘Perhaps-the-most-fateful...’
Bertie: “In this grave hour... perhaps-the-most-fateful... in our history...”
Become an expert from experience.
Nothing improves public speaking like doing it, as Bertie found out. When you cannot practice, study other people’s presentations  and learn from their experience. Bertie and his family, including his daughter, were watching the news, when part of a speech by a famous speaker was on air. If you watch and listen to others, you’ll notice what they do well and what they don’t do well. Adapt any styles that you would feel comfortable with using, and be sure not to repeat any mistakes that others have made.
Broadcast a true version of yourself.
Be genuine when you speak. While you’re learning a lot from different people, don’t compromise your style if you feel uncomfortable doing it. Smile if you usually do, or be funny or active if you naturally are. Bertie was loved by his people because his stammer humanized him. He was a hero in spite of his imperfections. Be genuine and don’t be afraid of your flaws; they are what make you human.
Bertie, in his quiet way, is totally in control of his speech. Everyone in the broadcast room is surprised as he concludes:
Bertie: ... We may all find a message of encouragement in the lines which, in my closing words, I would like to say to you. ( ... ) May the Almighty Hand guide and uphold us all.
BBC newsreader: This concludes the BBC broadcast of the king’s speech.
Another ‘cut ’ gesture from the floor manager, and the red light goes out.
BBC newsreader : (softly) He wasn’t perfect. (barely controlling his tears) Not perfect... but by God... he moved me.

a. 수증기
a. 10% 이상
b. 2~10%
a. 50년   b. 100년   c. 200년

Lesson 7. Do We Really Know about Global Warming?
Don’t burn your kids’ future.
It’s your house, don’t damage the roof!
Have you ever heard of these phrases? These are about global warming. Global warming has become a very familiar word to us. So we all think we know about global warming, but do we really? Let’s find out how much we know about it. If you visit our website, you will see several questions that will test your knowledge on global warming. Now click on our site!
1. Global warming is nothing new. It also happened in the past, no need to react too much.
True  False
Even though temperature rose and various climate changes occurred in the past, they were fundamentally different from today’s global warming. Because more and more people are burning up fossil fuels and cutting down forests, more CO2 is being pumped into the atmosphere.
2. Due to global warming, the temperature will rise in all the regions of the world.
True  False
The average temperature will rise, but in some areas of the world, global warming can mean a cooling off, especially around near the tropical areas and at the equator. When these areas cool, native tropical plants, animals, and birds may not be able to survive the colder temperatures and may either migrate to other areas, or die out and become extinct.
3. Due to global warming, the earth will be heated up in the end.
True  False
Many scientists and climate experts say that global warming is part of the cycle that will eventually end in another ice age. They argue that the current environmental crisis may speed up this process, making the earth very hostile to mankind and other inhabitants in the future.
4. Global warming is caused primarily by:
a. water vapor
b. CO2
c. ozone-destroying aerosol sprays
Although steam, or water vapor, traps more heat than CO2, water vapor is not what causes global warming. Air warmed by CO2 holds more water vapor, magnifying the effect. To interrupt this cycle and stop global warming, we must control the emission of gases like CO2.
5. How much CO2 do you guess is in the earth’s atmosphere today?
a. 10 percent or more
b. 2 ~ 10 percent
c. less than 0.1 percent
CO2 is about 0.038 percent of the earth’s atmosphere. This sounds like a small amount, compared with nitrogen accounting for about 77 percent, but even small amounts of gases can have a large effect that we easily notice.
6. How long does it take for CO2 in the atmosphere to go away?
a. 50 years   b. 100 years   c. 200 years
One hundred years! It means that even if CO2 emissions ceased immediately, past actions would still affect the planet for many decades to come. So now is the right time to act on climate change.
7. Which of the following uses the least energy, resulting in less emission of CO2?
a. light bulb
b. compact fluorescent light bulb
c. halogen bulb
A compact fluorescent light uses 60-80 percent less energy than a light bulb or halogen bulb.
How do you feel after answering questions? How many questions did you solve? And do you feel a need to do some thing to fight against global warming? A great way to help is to get others involved in the global warming issue. When you inform people about how bad global warming is, people might become interested and take action. Why not get your whole family involved!

Getting the Most from Your OTC Medications => https://youtu.be/YZmKh5SwzVk

Lesson 6. Getting the Most from Your OTC Medications
Over-the-counter(OTC) medication is medicine that does not require a doctor’s prescription for purchase. Prescription drugs, on the other hand, require a doctor’s permission to be purchased at a pharmacy. Many people believe there are few physical risks involved with OTC drug use. Since childhood, they have been given medicine by their parents to relieve pain, reduce symptoms of colds, and soothe an upset stomach. Perhaps because of that, people sometimes have dangerous misunderstandings about OTC medications, including the following:
• Over-the-counter drugs are safe and do not cause side effects.
• Reading the whole label is not necessary because I know why I am taking the medicine.
• If the recommended dose doesn’t work, I should take more.
• I can take the medication as often as I think I need to.
Over-the-counter medications can produce a range of damaging effects when used incorrectly – for example, taking more than is recommended, using more frequently than directed, or combining them with other drugs. Here is a case of an overdose.
A 16-year-old boy was taken to an emergency room by his mother. She stated that for the past three days he had not been behaving like himself. She thought it was because he had taken a long walk on a very hot day. Since then, she noticed that he seemed pale and was having trouble breathing. The symptoms had become worse as time passed and he started not to make sense when he talked. His mother stated he did not take any medication. He had, however, taken aspirin, an OTC drug, by the handful all the time for headaches. That was a lot more aspirin than was recommended.

OTC medications are convenient, but consumers need to use them responsibly. That is why we should always read drug information, including any warnings or cautions, uses, side effects, overdose, and storage. The following is an example of a drug information sheet. Read the information carefully and then think about safety and convenience issues in OTC medications.

Lesson 5. Unique Architecture Around the World
The word “architecture” is a commonly used word. It can be simply defined as a mix of art and science that includes the design and construction of various buildings and structures. The world of architecture seems to show that there is no limit to human creativity.
The Basket Building (USA)
Can you guess what this building is used for? Dave Longaberger, the founder of a company which sells baskets, had a dream to build his office into a giant basket. Dave believed the idea would draw attention to the company. However, when he started spreading the idea of building an office in the shape of a basket, he found that most people just thought he was joking. Not only did the bankers, architects, and construction companies not take Dave seriously, neither did many of the employees who worked for his company. But Dave was determined. His dream was achieved on December 17, 1997, when the office that looked like a basket finally opened for business.
The Cube Houses (Netherlands)
One of the icons of Rotterdam is the Cube Houses, designed by the Dutch architect Piet Blom. The architecture is in fact built on a pedestrian bridge in the center of Rotterdam. The town planners asked Piet Blom to newly decorate the bridge in the 1970s. Due to financial reasons, the construction was completed much later in 1984. According to Blom, the top of the individual house represents an abstract tree, and all houses together make up a yellow forest. The Cube Houses could be called an architectural wonder since Blom has considered the form and aesthetics much more important than practical purpose.
The Dancing House (Czech Republic)
The Dancing House is one of the most interesting Prague houses built at the end of the 20th century. It represents a man and a woman dancing together. This amazing building was designed by a Czech architect Vlado Milunic, together with a Canadian architect Frank Gehry. The site was originally occupied by a house, which had been destroyed during a bombing attack in 1945. The very non-traditional design was controversial at the time, but it has become one of the most acclaimed modern buildings in Prague. In 1996, it received the Design of the Year Award from the American Time magazine.
Kansas City Library Garage (USA)
One of the attractions of Kansas City in Missouri is the appearance of the parking garage for the public library. The garage looks like a row of books lined up on a shelf, except in this case the books are 25 feet high and 9 feet wide. The garage behind the books was constructed in 2006 in response to the need for additional parking. Community input was requested on ways to make the new structure attractive, and ultimately the idea of a bookshelf came up. The people of Kansas City were asked to help pick highly influential book titles that represent Kansas City. This method ensured the design, as well as the titles, would truly represent the wide range of cultural and literary interests of the city’s people.
Does the world of unique architecture interest you? Exploring how architects express their creativity is exciting. Great architects will always remind people of their great creativity through their amusing ideas.

Lesson 4. Have You Heard of a Space Elevator?
The days of 2050 are a mystery for us and I really think life in that year will be quite different from today's. Before those days come, we can dream as much as we like. Here is one day in 2050 for Minho and Amy.
During the entire night, Minho's Personal Wearable Bio Monitor(PWBM) monitors his sleep and analyzes when is the best time to wake him up, between 6:30 and 7:00 a.m. After getting up, he eats a food capsule, whose effects last for 12 hours. The word "lunch" disappeared when the capsule was invented in 2030. After eating a capsule, Minho turns on the monitor to say hello to his father who works in the space station. He went up there last Sunday by taking a space elevator. The space elevator has begun transporting people to the space station since 2040. After a small talk with his father, he takes a hoverboard, similar to a skateboard but it can fly, to reach his school 50 km away. If he did not have it, it would take 3 hours for him to get to school. But thanks to the flying vehicles, people don't worry about traffic jams anymore. For students, any school is now reachable within minutes. When Minho arrives at school, he is automatically registered by a computer through a chip in his body. Taking attendance by a teacher disappeared around 2020.
Minho is engaging in an online video chat with Jack on the moon. Jack was a classmate but his family moved to the moon last year. Minho's class will go to the moon next month as a school trip. Minho really wants to meet him again on the moon. They are talking about school life. Minho tells Jack what he did at the gym in the morning. All students' activities at the gym are automatically assessed by a central computer monitoring their health and well-being. The computer is programmed to provide early warnings in case of a potential, serious health problem.
After school, Amy is at a store with her mother. She receives a personal greeting message. She is the only one hearing it, thanks to the Personal Communicator Device(PCD) and the newly integrated wireless ear piece, a new nano-tech wireless device fully integrated to human bodies. As she leaves the store with two postcards, she is scanned by a Human Body Scanner and receives a thank-you message, with the detailed cost of her purchase. It has been billed to her bank account automatically. Credit cards and other forms of plastic cards have been history since 2030, thanks to the integration of bank account information in our PCD.
After dinner, Amy wants to watch the hockey game live on the TV. She turns on the TV by her voice and chooses the program by thinking. The TV is a holographic one. Holograms are pictures that have height, width, and depth, so we can feel and touch them. Finally, the hockey game starts and wow, it's exciting! Each player wears a camera and a personal bio sensor, so she can see in real-time the player's point of view oft he action as well as his heart rate. Quite thrilling to see how the goaltender's heart rate increases when faced to a 2 on 1.
Amy is now ready for a good night sleep with her PWBM. It checks her condition and controls the room's temperature and humidity for a good sleep. On the bed, she falls asleep thinking of how different life will be in 2100.

Lesson 3. Great Movie Locations to Visit
Traveling always makes us excited. If you travel to a place you saw in a movie, you will find that very interesting. Here are some places you might be familiar with from seeing them in movies.
When you think of traveling in Europe, a lot of places will come to your mind. If you are a fan of musical movies, Santorini, the Greek island, can be one of your travel destinations. This is not only a setting for Mamma Mia, but also a regular place in posters and postcards. Bright white houses, small hotels, and outdoor cafes hang on the edge of steep cliffs that go down to the blue Aegean Sea. Every year, thousands of tourists visit Santorini to experience the famous undersea caldera, and they admire some of the most beautiful traditional villages of the Greek islands, the Cyclades. While walking or biking around the villages, you could remember a scene where Donna and Sam had a reunion and ran around these villages, singing "The Winner Takes It All" in Mamma Mia. The lively colors of the white houses with their blue painted windows contrast against the black volcanic rocks rising from the sea. If you ever see it in person, you will find this view very exciting.
If you watched the movie Avatar, you must be surprised at the scene when Neytiri and Jake were flying above the floating "Hallelujah Mountains." And you thought Pandora’s world, Na'vi's forested habitable moon, could not exist on the Earth. It cannot. However, the "Hallelujah Mountains" in Avatar were actually inspired by the Chinese mountains that exist in Yuanjiajie. If you have a chance to travel to China, you should witness the floating mountains in person.
Yuanjiajie is located in the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. It is a naturally formed platform mountain, surrounded by higher summits which are divided by deep valleys. You will walk on the mountains' edge and watch clouds rise from beneath your feet. As you climb up the mountains, you are made to sense the closeness of the mountains, with the impression you could almost touch them. Many peaks rise from the deep valley floor, causing you to recall the images that the mountains are floating upside down in the movie. Like Neytiri and Jake did, you might feel as if you were flying among the peaks, riding on the clouds.
In the USA, New York City is common in many movies. If you want to experience busy city streets, New York City is a perfect place! There are many things to do in New York! One of them would be visiting Rockefeller Center. It would not be winter without a chance to ice skate in one of New York City’s most celebrated locations. Here you will find both New Yorkers and visitors, skating under the watchful eyes of the golden statue of Prometheus and the unique urban backdrop of Rockefeller Center’s sparkling lights. You may recall the scene in which skating Jonathan talked to Sarah in Serendipity. Try skating on that rink and being a Jonathan or a Sarah.
If you are lucky, you will see the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree, which also appears in a lot of movies. The tree has been a crowd pleaser for more than 75 years. The tree lighting ceremony attracts a lot of people, but you don’t have to be at the ceremony to see the tree. You can admire the tree’s brilliant lights all season long.
There are many places you may feel familiar and may want to visit. Why don’t you research these places? Maybe you will find yourself walking around the place in the future.

Lesson 2. Becoming a Smart Online Shopper
Young students like buying items online because it is convenient and saves time. Websites also have a wide selection of products. Amy likes to buy stationery items online. She can search for fancy pens, highlighters, or pencil cases which are unique and newly-released through several mouse clicks even at night. This month she bought a pen topped with a little cat. She was so happy because she never found that kind of pen around her. She struck gold this time because the website was full of unique items.
There are, however, disadvantages of shopping online. Minho sometimes buys clothes at online shopping malls because he doesn't have time for store shopping. Last week he found a new online shopping mall which offers trendy shirts and pants. He ordered two pairs of pants and had to wait for a few days for them to arrive. When he actually put on the pants, he found the black pants were small for him though he ordered the same size for both. So he called the customer service to return the black one, but was told to pay the shipping charge for returning it. It often happens when he purchases clothes online, because he cannot actually try them on.
When you buy things online, there is always the possibility of returning the item. Therefore, you need to read the return policy carefully before purchasing. Some sites do have excellent return policies, but not all. Every site has a different return policy. In addition, return conditions are different item by item. The following is an example of a return policy.
Returns on items purchased online may be made only within 14 days of shipment for exchange, credit, or refund. Refunds are for products only; shipping charges are not refundable, and will be applied for any new items shipped.
Items that CANNOT be returned:
• underwear
• special order items
• group orders

Returned items must be:
• in new, resalable condition, free of any damage or signs of wear
• in original packaging with tags still attached
Even if a shopping mall has a good return policy, you still may have a problem. When you have a problem, you can call or write about your problem. It is a good idea to inform the seller formally and in writing. That way the seller is clearly aware of the problem and your request, and you have a record of your contact.
A complaint letter should 1) explain the problem, 2) state the outcome you want, and 3) express your expectation that the seller will resolve the matter quickly. Make sure you keep copies of any letters or documents that you send. Here is an example of a complaint letter.

Problem with black pants

Dear Manager,
On May 12, I ordered pants from your online shopping mall. When they were delivered today, I tried them on. I ordered the same size for two pairs of pants but the black pants were small. I was told to pay the shipping charge in order to return them. However, it's not fair because it's not explained that the black pants are smaller than other pants of the same size. I'd like you to accept the return without the shipping charge. I would appreciate it if you could resolve this matter quickly. Please find the attached photocopy of my receipt as proof of purchase.
Thank you for your kind attention to this matter.
I can be contacted at 000-111-2222.
Sincerely,
Minho Bak

Lesson 1. Dances Around the World
Every nation has its own traditional dances that characterize its culture. Let’s look into some of the popular dances around the world and learn about their cultural background.
Fly over to South America and you'll be able to experience the attractive country of Argentina. People in Argentina take great pride in their national dance called Tango. It is enjoyed all over the world. It’s a dance performed with a partner and has a rich history. It originated in Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, in the mid 19th century from the poor classes of European immigrants. People danced Tango to express their longings for their families that they left behind in their home countries. At that time, Tango was thought to be too exotic, therefore making it ideal for lower class. However, it spread rapidly through Europe in the early 1900s, especially in London and Paris. The European popularity of Tango eventually made it more appropriate to the higher classes of Buenos Aires.
Now let’s travel to Spain and meet the world-famous Flamenco dance. It is the traditional dance of the gypsies of Andalucia, the southern region of Spain. Even though Flamenco is still deeply connected to the gypsy culture, many non-gypsies have contributed to expanding it both in Spain and overseas. Flamenco expresses the deepest emotions, usually sadness, and reflects the sufferings of the gypsies. It is a passionate dance in which the Flamenco dancer pours emotion from his or her body to the sound of guitar strings.
In Asia, there is a unique dance in the Philippines, Tinikling. It translates as "bamboo dance" in English and is one of the most popular Philippine dances. This dance was born on the island of Leyte in the Visayan Islands. The worst enemy of the people on the island was a particular bird that ate up the ripening rice  grains. To catch these annoying birds, the farmers would place traps made of bamboo. This bird was named tikling, from which the Tinikling dance got its name. The dance imitates the movement of the tikling birds escaping from the bamboo traps set by the farmers. Today, the Tinikling is performed during cultural gatherings and holidays.
The last dance to introduce to you is a traditional dance of Korea known as the Farmer’s Dance(Nongangmu). Having originated in the Three Kingdoms Period, the Farmer’s Dance was traditionally performed during planting, harvesting, and other agricultural events to give encouragement to farmers. It was also often performed as a ritual to protect the village and to give thanks to the river or mountain spirits. The Farmer's Dance is characterized by its fast-paced music and vibrant body movements. The most exciting feature of the dance is that the dancers have long, white paper ribbons attache to their hats and twirl them to the music. Today the Farmer’s Dance is seen mostly at special festivals and art competitions. However, it can also be witnessed from time to time at major village events in rural areas.
There are many ways to learn about the culture of other countries. Learning about their traditional dances can be an interesting way to expand your knowledge. But there is a more effective way: instead of learning about a dance, learn the dance itself!
