Lesson 8. Lessons from The King's Speech

Prince Albert, known to his family as Bertie, became the king of England in 1936. It was not what he wanted, but thereafter he was known as King George VI. Cursed from childhood with a terrible stammer, he struggled painfully in public until his wife convinced him to seek the help of Lionel Logue, an Australian speech therapist. King George overcame his stammer, found his voice, and became one of England’s most beloved kings.

The king’s disability was the subject of the movie The King’s Speech. The five lessons described below, taken from the film, are useful tips on how we can all communicate better. With lessons from King George, you can be transformed into a capable public speaker!

Have faith in your voice.
As a child, young Bertie was both teased and ignored by the powerful men in his family. Growing up, his stammer became worse because he believed he didn’t have a voice. Just as many beginning speakers struggle to get their words out, Bertie had to overcome a lack of faith in himself. Just as the crown was given to Bertie at an early age, you too will have your moment to shine. The question is: Will you have faith in yourself and in what you are saying? The secret here is to persist.

Bertie: What are you doing? Get up!
Lionel: I’m tired.
Bertie: You can’t sit there!
Lionel: Why not? It’s a chair.
Bertie: It’s the chair upon which every King for six and a half centuries has been crowned.
Lionel: I don’t care how many royal backsides have sat on it, it’s a building block with handles attached.
Bertie: Listen to me ...
Lionel: Listen to you? By what right?
Bertie: Divine right, if you must! I’m your King!

Lionel: No, you’re not! You said you didn’t want it. So why should I listen to a poor stammering fellow who can’t put one word after another? Why waste my time listening to you?
Bertie: Because I have a right to be heard!
Lionel: Heard as what?
Bertie: A man! I HAVE A VOICE!
Lionel: (quietly) Well then... you’re cured.

Admit you need help.
Bertie was willing to admit he had a problem. His success was largely due to one man: an Australian speech therapist, Lionel Logue. The young king could have been consumed by his ego, but instead was open to the support of his wife Elizabeth and to being trained by Lionel. Lionel helped Bertie overcome his speech problem, turning him into a great king. No one can become a great presenter by himself/herself. A person needs to let go of his ego, reach out, and be open to criticism. Remember, though, that you are only as great as the people close to you. Find your own Lionel and Elizabeth.

Put the hours in.
At first the young king was convinced that his stammer could not be fixed. It was not until he threw himself into Lionel’s exercises that he was able to progress. There is no substitute for hard work. You have to roll up your sleeves and put in the hours to get to where you want to be.
Bertie: “In this grave hour...” Sorry.
Lionel: Try again.
Bertie: Lionel, I can’t do this!
Lionel: Take it from the top. “In this grave hour...”
Bertie: (hesitates, then) “In this grave hour, p-p-perhaps...”
Lionel: Go on...
Bertie: The letter ‘p’ is always difficult.
Lionel: Get a running start, put the words all together. ‘Perhaps-the-most-fateful...’
Bertie: “In this grave hour... perhaps-the-most-fateful... in our history...”

Become an expert from experience.
Nothing improves public speaking like doing it, as Bertie found out. When you cannot practice, study other people’s presentations  and learn from their experience. Bertie and his family, including his daughter, were watching the news, when part of a speech by a famous speaker was on air. If you watch and listen to others, you’ll notice what they do well and what they don’t do well. Adapt any styles that you would feel comfortable with using, and be sure not to repeat any mistakes that others have made. 
Broadcast a true version of yourself.
Be genuine when you speak. While you’re learning a lot from different people, don’t compromise your style if you feel uncomfortable doing it. Smile if you usually do, or be funny or active if you naturally are. Bertie was loved by his people because his stammer humanized him. He was a hero in spite of his imperfections. Be genuine and don’t be afraid of your flaws; they are what make you human.

Bertie, in his quiet way, is totally in control of his speech. Everyone in the broadcast room is surprised as he concludes:

Bertie: ... We may all find a message of encouragement in the lines which, in my closing words, I would like to say to you. ( ... ) May the Almighty Hand guide and uphold us all.
BBC newsreader: This concludes the BBC broadcast of the king’s speech.
Another ‘cut ’ gesture from the floor manager, and the red light goes out.
BBC newsreader : (softly) He wasn’t perfect. (barely controlling his tears) Not perfect... but by God... he moved me.
