Neha Gupta
A teen hero
The person of the year: Neha gupta
Neha Gupta is an Indian- American teen from Pennsylvania, U.S.A When she was a little girl, she sometimes visited her grandparents` in India. While there, she volunteered with them at an orphanage. One day, a girl at the orphanage said to Neha, "If we had money, we would go to school, but we don`t have money so we`ve never been to school." Neha found out the girls and slept on a cold dirty floor. Neha thought they were poor because they were not educated. She wanted to help with their education. Instead of just feeling sorry for the girls, she decided to do something. Some people said,"If you were an adult, you could do it, but you`re just 9 years old. Do you really think you can change anything?"
"You may not think that you can change anything, but you can, of you only try."
What they said, however, didn`t stop her. When she went back to the United States, she raised money to help them. A few years later, she even made an organization, Empower Orphans, which sends food, clothes, books, and many other things to orphans. She also opened libraries, computer rooms, and health care centers to help orphans learn. Today Neha is 15 years old and her organization has helped more than 15000 children in India and the U.S.A. She is now planning to help children in Africa and in other Asian countries. Here is her message for you."Have you ever done any volunteer work or raised money to help others? Do you think it is too difficult? Af first, I did not know where to start either, but I set goals and started with small ideas. Do you think you are too young? Remember age is just a number. You may not think that you can change anything, but you can, if you only try."
