Lesson 5 Dances in Art

 Dance is one of the most popular subjects for art. Many artists have made paintings of dance, but they chose different people, places, and types of dance. Why is dance a popular subject among so many artists? It is because many artists want to paint people or animals that are moving. Let's take a look at some paintings of dancers.

 Brueghel is famous for his peasant paintings. He liked to paint peasants who were working or playing. The Wedding Dance in the Open Air is one of his famous works. It is of a dance that took place in a village after a wedding. In the picture, many peasants are dancing happily. Their costumes and dances are simple, but the people look active and lively.

 In 1883, Renoir completed two paintings that look very similar, The Dance in the City and The Dance in the Country. Both paintings show a couple who are dancing, but the women look different from each other.

 The woman in The Dance in the City is wearing a beautiful white dress, but she is not smiling. On the other hand, in The Dance in the Country, we see a cheerful woman with a bright smile. How happy she looks!

 Degas lived at the same time as Renoir. He is famous for his paintings of ballet dancers. He liked to draw ballet dancers who were moving. The Star is one of Degas' most famous paintings. Degas made this painting while he was in a theater. He looked down on the stage and followed the fast movement of the dancer. What a beautiful painting it is!
