Animals Like Us
We, humans, learn at a very young age that we have to be nice to each other. What about animals? We have discovered many cases where animals seem to be nice to each other. But do you think animals are really nice? Read the following stories and decide for yourself.
Foxy Friends
If your friend wasn't nice to you, what would you do? Maybe you would just walk away. That's exactly what a fox in Yellowstone National Park did.
A female fox was playing with a male fox. The male fox began pushing her too hard. The female fox didn't like it, so she walked away. The male, who wanted to keep playing, ran to the female, bowed down, and rolled over. His body language meant, "Don't leave. I'll be nicer." She gave him another chance, and he played more nicely this time.
A Gift from Above
A dog named Toby and a cat named Katie lived together in the same house in London for ten years. After dinner, the owner always gave them the leftovers. The owner would drop some in Toby's bowl on the floor and some in Katie's dish on the kitchen table.
Every night, Toby would finish his food in seconds and look up at Katie. Then Katie would drop some tasty pieces down to the waiting dog. In return, whenever Toby was lying on his bed and Katie walked over, Toby would give up his nice, warm bed to Katie and lie on the floor.
A Helping Trunk
In Kenya, an elephant injured the tip of his trunk while he was freeing himself from a trap. Until his trunk got better, he needed help with getting food. The injured elephant walked up and stuck his trunk into the mouth of a completely strange elephant. The healthy elephant understood what the poor elephant wanted. So he pulled out a small tree from the ground, and put it into his new friend's mouth.
As you can see, animals can be really nice. Sometimes, they will go out of their way to help other animals. Why do they do this? It's likely that they feel good when they help others, just like you and me.
