Katrina Backpacks

In 2005, hurricane Katrina hit Louisiana.

Thousands of people lost their homes.

A boy, Zach, watched people living in tents on the news.

He felt so sad seeing the broken houses and the crying babies.

He decided to collect some things they would need and put them into backpacks.

He thought the backpacks would be useful when the children went back to their schools.

Zach sent 100 backpacks and helped many families in need.

Penguins in Sweaters

In 2000, there was an oil spill in Australia.

The oil destroyed the penguins' natural oil that keeps them warm.

Many penguins died from the cold.

Jennifer, a 15-year-old girl, heard her teacher talking about the "Sweaters for Penguins" project.

She decided to join the project and started making small sweaters.

After the penguins were cleaned and dressed in the sweaters, they got well and were put back into the sea.

Books for the Blind

Last summer vacation, a student named Minji saw a volunteer poster.

It was about making special books for the blind.

It said there were not enough books for blind students.

Minji decided to be a volunteer.

As a volunteer, she typed a middle school science book for a week.

Her work was made into special books that had raised dots.
