Lesson 4. Have You Heard of a Space Elevator?

The days of 2050 are a mystery for us and I really think life in that year will be quite different from today's. Before those days come, we can dream as much as we like. Here is one day in 2050 for Minho and Amy.

During the entire night, Minho's Personal Wearable Bio Monitor(PWBM) monitors his sleep and analyzes when is the best time to wake him up, between 6:30 and 7:00 a.m. After getting up, he eats a food capsule, whose effects last for 12 hours. The word "lunch" disappeared when the capsule was invented in 2030. After eating a capsule, Minho turns on the monitor to say hello to his father who works in the space station. He went up there last Sunday by taking a space elevator. The space elevator has begun transporting people to the space station since 2040. After a small talk with his father, he takes a hoverboard, similar to a skateboard but it can fly, to reach his school 50 km away. If he did not have it, it would take 3 hours for him to get to school. But thanks to the flying vehicles, people don't worry about traffic jams anymore. For students, any school is now reachable within minutes. When Minho arrives at school, he is automatically registered by a computer through a chip in his body. Taking attendance by a teacher disappeared around 2020.

Minho is engaging in an online video chat with Jack on the moon. Jack was a classmate but his family moved to the moon last year. Minho's class will go to the moon next month as a school trip. Minho really wants to meet him again on the moon. They are talking about school life. Minho tells Jack what he did at the gym in the morning. All students' activities at the gym are automatically assessed by a central computer monitoring their health and well-being. The computer is programmed to provide early warnings in case of a potential, serious health problem.

After school, Amy is at a store with her mother. She receives a personal greeting message. She is the only one hearing it, thanks to the Personal Communicator Device(PCD) and the newly integrated wireless ear piece, a new nano-tech wireless device fully integrated to human bodies. As she leaves the store with two postcards, she is scanned by a Human Body Scanner and receives a thank-you message, with the detailed cost of her purchase. It has been billed to her bank account automatically. Credit cards and other forms of plastic cards have been history since 2030, thanks to the integration of bank account information in our PCD.

After dinner, Amy wants to watch the hockey game live on the TV. She turns on the TV by her voice and chooses the program by thinking. The TV is a holographic one. Holograms are pictures that have height, width, and depth, so we can feel and touch them. Finally, the hockey game starts and wow, it's exciting! Each player wears a camera and a personal bio sensor, so she can see in real-time the player's point of view oft he action as well as his heart rate. Quite thrilling to see how the goaltender's heart rate increases when faced to a 2 on 1.

Amy is now ready for a good night sleep with her PWBM. It checks her condition and controls the room's temperature and humidity for a good sleep. On the bed, she falls asleep thinking of how different life will be in 2100.
