장면 1

1815년의 프랑스이다. Jean Valjean은 빵을 훔친 것 때문에 19년이 지나 감옥에서 막 나왔다. 그는 갈 곳이 없지만, Myriel이라는 이름의 친절한 주교가 그를 받아들여 주고 음식도 준다. 한밤중에, Valjean은 은을 훔쳐서 달아나지만 잡힌다.

경찰관: 그 은은 어디에서 났소

Valjean: Myriel 주교님이 저에게 은을 선물로 주셨습니다.

경찰관: 거짓말하지 마시오. 당신은 도둑이오.

(Myriel 주교가 등장한다.)

주교: 그는 진실을 말하고 있습니다. 제가 정말 그에게 은을 주었어요. 그런데 나의 친구여, 당신은 내가 이 은촛대도 준것을 기억하지 못하나요

주교: 언젠가 당신은 이해하게 될 것입니다. 하지만 기억하세요, 내 친구여. 당신은 이 소중한 은을 정직한 사람이 되는 데 사용해야만 합니다.

나중에 Valjean은 한 소년이 떨어뜨린 동전을 밟는다. 그 소년은 Valjean이 그 동전을 훔쳤다고 생각하고 경찰에게로 뛰어간다. Valjean은 무슨 일이 일어났는지 깨닫고 그 동전을 소년에게 돌려주려고 노력한다. 하지만 너무 늦게 된다. 그는 다시 도둑이 되고, 다시 도망다니는 신세가 된다.

장면 2

1823년이다. Valjean은 그의 이름을 바꾸고 그의 과거를 숨기고 한 도시의 시장이 된다. 어느날 한 남자가 수레 아래에 깔려 위험에 처한다. Valjean을 쫓는 경찰관 Javert가 근처에 있다. Valjean은 Javert가 누구인지 알지만, Javert는 시장이 Valjean임을 알지 못한다.

Valjean: 여기에 이 남자를 구해 줄 사람이 있나요

여자: 너무 위험해요.

Valjean: 우리는 무언가를 해야 해요.

남자: 아무도 수레를 들어 올릴 만큼 충분히 힘이 세지 않아요.

Javert: 나는 한때 그렇게 힘이 센 사람을 알고 있었소.

Valjean: (혼잣말로) 내가 만일 수레를 들어올리면, Javert는 내가 누구인지 의심할거야... 하지만 나는 그 남자가 죽도록 내버려 둘 수 없어.

(Valjean 수레를 들어 올리자 사람들은 그 남자를 끌어낸다.)

Javert: 나는 내 눈을 믿지 못하겠습니다! 당신은 나에게 수년 전의 어떤 사람을 떠올리게 하는군요.

Valjean: 누구 말인가요

Javert: Jean Valjean이라는 이름의 도둑입니다. 그는 내가 아는 다른 어떤 사람보다 더 힘이 셌습니다.

Valjean: 계속하시오.

Javert: 죄송합니다, 시장님. 아무것도 아닙니다. 그는 마침내 붙잡혔습니다.

1832년이다. Valjean과 Javert는 다시 만난다. 이번에는 Valjean이 총을 들고 있다.

Javert: 나를 죽일 건가

Javert: 한 번 도둑은 영원한 도둑인 것을. 당신은 결코 변하지 않을 것이오. 이제 나를 쏘시오! 나는 상관없소!

Valjean: 당신이 틀렸소, 그리고 당신은 언제나 틀려왔소. 주교님 덕분에, 옛날의 Jean Valjean은 죽었소. 나는 그분이 나를 용서한 것처럼 당신을 용서하겠소.

(허공에 총을 쏜다.) 이제 가시오!

Scene 1

   It is 1815 in France. Jean Valjean has just come out of prison after 19 years for stealing some bread. He has no place to go, but a kind bishop named Myriel takes him in and gives him some food. In the middle of the night, Valjean steals some silver and runs away, but is caught.

Police officer: Where did you get the silver?

Valjean:    Bishop Myriel gave the silver to me as a gift.

Police officer:  Stop lying. You are a thief.

(Bishop Myriel enters.)

Bishop:     He's telling the truth. I did give the silver to him. But my friend, don't you remember I gave you these candlesticks, too?

             (gives Valjean two silver candlesticks)

Police officer: I'm terribly sorry. I will let him go.

(Police officer leaves.)

Valjean: Why did you save me?

Bishop:        One day you will understand. But remember, my friend. You must use this precious silver to become an honest man.

   Later Valjean steps on a coin that a boy has dropped. The boy thinks that Valjean stole the coin and runs to the police. Valjean realizes what happened and tries to return the coin to the boy. But it is too late. He is a thief again, and he is on the run again.

Scene 2

   The year is 1823. Valjean changes his name, hides his past, and becomes the mayor of a town. One day a man is stuck under a cart and is in danger. Javert, a police officer who is after Valjean, is near. Valjean knows who Javert is, but Javert does not know that the mayor is Valjean.

Valjean:       Is there anyone here who will rescue the man?

Woman:       It's too dangerous.

Valjean:       We have to do something.

Man:   No one is strong enough to lift the cart.

Javert:  I once knew a man who was that strong.

Valjean:       (to himself) If I lift the cart, Javert might suspect who I am.... But I cannot let the man die.

(Valjean lifts the cart and people pull the man out.)

Javert:  I don't believe my eyes! You make me think of a man from years ago.

Valjean:       Who?

Javert:  A thief named Jean Valjean. He was stronger than any other man I knew.

Valjean:       Go on.

Javert:  I'm sorry, Mr. Mayor. It's nothing. He's finally been caught.

Valjean: What? Where is he now?

Javert:  He's going to be sentenced in court today.

Valjean:       (to himself) What should I do? Should I save him? No! But if I stay quiet, an innocent man will go to prison.

   Valjean goes to court and tells everyone that he is the real Jean Valjean. The innocent man is freed and Valjean runs away.

Scene 3

   The year is 1832. Valjean and Javert meet again. This time Valjean is holding a gun.

Javert:  Are you going to kill me?

Valjean: Your life is safe in my hands.

Javert:  Once a thief, forever a thief. You will never change. Shoot me now! I don't care!

Valjean: You are wrong, and have always been wrong. Thanks to the bishop, the old Jean Valjean is gone.

        I forgive you as he forgave me.

        (shoots the gun in the air)

        Now go!
