The Dangerous Sauna

Thanks to Shirley Holmes, Bakersville was a very safe town. People thought twice about even throwing garbage on the street. They knew that sooner or later Shirley would find out who did it. But since there was no crime, Shirley's detective business was really slow. If she had not been such a great detective, her business would have been more successful. So she decided to open a detective website.

The website soon became popular by word of mouth. People from all over the country posted cases. She would have solved all the cases, but some were too unimportant, such as, "I lost my mind. Can you find it?"

Other cases such as, "My dog Harry is missing," didn't have enough information. The owner didn't say what kind of dog Harry was.

One case caught Shirley's attention. It was titled, "The Dangerous Sauna." Shirley thought that it was an interesting title and decided to read on:

Dear Shirley,

There has been a crime in our quiet town of Osteen. Mr. Rich, our town banker, was in the sauna when the lights went out suddenly. When the lights came back on, he was lying on the floor with a knife wound on his back. Luckily, the wound wasn't serious, and his life wasn't in danger. We checked the whole sauna, but we couldn't find the knife. At the time, there were three people in the sauna with Mr. Rich. Here is a list of the suspects.

Quick! What comes to mind when you hear the words Easter eggs? Many of you would picture the brightly colored eggs that are used to celebrate Easter.

Easter eggs are often hidden outdoors during Easter or birthday parties for people to find. Sometimes the eggs contain chocolates, candies or other surprises. Other times, they are real eggs, and the person who finds the most eggs gets a prize. There is, however, a more interesting type of Easter egg that only a few people know about.

Easter eggs are also hidden jokes or messages in a work such as a computer program, web page, game, movie, and painting. They are called Easter eggs because, like the original eggs, they are also hidden for other people to find. They are created just for fun and cannot be easily found.

If you're still not sure what type of Easter eggs we are talking about, here is an example. Everyone knows Mickey Mouse, right? Well, did you know he secretly appears in many movies? For example, in the original Tron movie, you can see his large head.

Easter eggs appear not only in movies but also in paintings. Many of you know this painting by Kim Hong-do. But take a close look at the man sitting in the lower right-hand corner. Do you see anything strange about his right hand? Yes. His right hand looks like his left hand! Kim uses this Easter egg in his other paintings as well.

Here is an Easter egg that you can find on many computers in Korea. On these computers, when you make a new folder, the name of the folder is a name of a bird. But if you make more than 190 folders in a row, something interesting happens. Running out of bird names, the computer makes folder names like, "Please stop making new folders," and "I've run out of bird names."

The next Easter egg can be found on a cell phone. Do you know the meaning of the word tilt ? It means that something is not straight. Search the word tilt on the Google website. Do you notice that the results are a little tilted?

An Island You Never Want to Visit

Picture this. You're sailing in the Pacific Ocean. The skies are sunny and the blue ocean is beautiful. It's like a scene right out of a movie. Then, all of a sudden, you see something up ahead. It looks like an island. You check the map but don't find any island there. Then you get closer and realize that it's not an island but floating garbage! You cannot believe your eyes.

What Is It?

The floating garbage is called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. It is located somewhere between California and Japan, and some studies say that it is about 14 times bigger than Korea. Most of the floating garbage is plastic. The floating garbage patch was discovered in 1997 by a man named Charles Moore. At first, he had mistaken it for an island.

Where Does It Come from?

The garbage comes from all over the world. It can be water bottles from Korea, food containers from the US, or plastic bags from Russia. When they get into rivers, they are carried out to sea. If they get caught in the ocean currents, they become part of the garbage patch.

What Are Its Effects?

Many fish, birds, and other sea animals mistake the garbage for food. They often die from eating plastic since their bodies cannot break it down.

When a dead bird from the area was cut open, there wasn't any fish in its stomach. Instead, there were many different plastic products!

Although this problem may seem far away from you, it is closer to you than you think. A small fish may eat some plastic. Then it can be eaten by a bigger fish or bird. The plastic can travel up the food chain to your dinner table. Maybe a piece of your plastic grocery bag or water bottle will end up in your stomach.

What Can We Do About It?

Here are some things we can do to stop the floating garbage problem from growing.

• Don’t throw garbage on the street.

• Recycle as much as you can.

• If you go to the beach, take your garbage back with you.

• Carry your own shopping bag.

• Most importantly, use fewer plastic products.

Remember that plastic does not break down naturally. Until scientists come up with a way to clean up the trash, we need to do everything we can. Let's help the sea animals, the earth and ourselves.

Police officer: Where did you get the silver?

Valjean:    Bishop Myriel gave the silver to me as a gift.

Police officer:  Stop lying. You are a thief.

(Bishop Myriel enters.)

Bishop:     He's telling the truth. I did give the silver to him. But my friend, don't you remember I gave you these candlesticks, too?

             (gives Valjean two silver candlesticks)

Police officer: I'm terribly sorry. I will let him go.

(Police officer leaves.)

Valjean: Why did you save me?

Bishop:        One day you will understand. But remember, my friend. You must use this precious silver to become an honest man.

   Later Valjean steps on a coin that a boy has dropped. The boy thinks that Valjean stole the coin and runs to the police. Valjean realizes what happened and tries to return the coin to the boy. But it is too late. He is a thief again, and he is on the run again.

Scene 2

   The year is 1823. Valjean changes his name, hides his past, and becomes the mayor of a town. One day a man is stuck under a cart and is in danger. Javert, a police officer who is after Valjean, is near. Valjean knows who Javert is, but Javert does not know that the mayor is Valjean.

Valjean:       Is there anyone here who will rescue the man?

Woman:       It's too dangerous.

Valjean:       We have to do something.

Man:   No one is strong enough to lift the cart.

Javert:  I once knew a man who was that strong.

Valjean:       (to himself) If I lift the cart, Javert might suspect who I am.... But I cannot let the man die.

(Valjean lifts the cart and people pull the man out.)

Javert:  I don't believe my eyes! You make me think of a man from years ago.

Valjean:       Who?

Javert:  A thief named Jean Valjean. He was stronger than any other man I knew.

Valjean:       Go on.

Javert:  I'm sorry, Mr. Mayor. It's nothing. He's finally been caught.

Valjean: What? Where is he now?

Javert:  He's going to be sentenced in court today.

Valjean:       (to himself) What should I do? Should I save him? No! But if I stay quiet, an innocent man will go to prison.

   Valjean goes to court and tells everyone that he is the real Jean Valjean. The innocent man is freed and Valjean runs away.

Scene 3

   The year is 1832. Valjean and Javert meet again. This time Valjean is holding a gun.

Javert:  Are you going to kill me?

Valjean: Your life is safe in my hands.

Javert:  Once a thief, forever a thief. You will never change. Shoot me now! I don't care!

Valjean: You are wrong, and have always been wrong. Thanks to the bishop, the old Jean Valjean is gone.

        I forgive you as he forgave me.

        (shoots the gun in the air)

        Now go!

이번 여름 방학은 지금껏 최고의 방학이 될 것이다. 나는 멕시코의 칸쿤에 갈 것이다! 우리 삼촌이 거기에 사셔서 우리 가족은 삼촌을 방문할 것이다. 나는 아주 신이 난다. 만약 내가 날개가 있다면, 날아갈 텐데!
8월 5일
나는 비행기를 세 번 갈아탔고 17시간 이상 걸렸다! 그러나 나는 피곤하지 않았다. 나는 많은 영화를 봤고 맛있는 식사를 했다. 이것은 거기로 가는 도중에 우리 아빠의 모습이다.
8월 6일

Hello, Mexico!

August 1

This summer vacation is going to be the best vacation ever. I'm going to Cancun, Mexico! My uncle lives there and my family is going to visit him. I'm so excited. If I had wings, I would fly!

August 5

I changed planes three times and it took more than 17 hours! But I wasn't tired. I saw many movies and had

delicious meals. This is what my dad looked like on the way there.

August 6

Wow! This is the beach right in front of my uncle's house. Look at the beautiful colors of the beach. The water is so clear and blue, and the sand is so white. You know what? It's not sand. It is really small pieces of coral. Here I'm swimming with colorful fish and coral. I felt as if I were in the movie, Finding Nemo.

August 7

Guess which country has the most pyramids in the world. Surprise! It's not Egypt, but Mexico! I went to see the Chichen Itza, one of the new seven wonders of the world. This is the El Castillo pyramid there. This pyramid looks different from the pointy Egyptian pyramids, doesn't it? Do you know that there are 91 steps on each of the four sides? If you add the top part as one step, there are 365 steps in total. My uncle told me that each step represents a day of the year. After I climbed all the steps, I felt one year older!

August 8

We went to a Mexican restaurant. I tried a yummy dish called fajitas. They were just like Korean ssam, but they were wrapped in really thin bread called tortilla instead of vegetables. I also tried jalapeno peppers. They weren't long and thin like Korean peppers but short and round. The waiter told me that they were hot, but they looked cute. So I tried one. Can you see the fire coming out of my mouth?

August 9

Have you ever swum in a cave? It was an amazing experience! When we were in the cave, my brother Jiho shouted, "Watch out, Sujin! There's a snake right above you!" I couldn't move at all because I was so scared. Luckily, it was only a joke. Later I told Jiho that he had a lizard on his head, but he didn't believe me. The funny thing is I wasn't kidding! Look at him running away. Haha!!

August 10

This is a traditional Mayan show! We danced, sang, and played sports like the ancient Mayans. This is a man with traditional Mayan body paint. I think my father looks scarier!

What a great week! I wish I could stay longer. I'll miss you, Mexico!
