어느 날 왕이 그의 나라를 여행하기 위하여 여행자처럼 옷을 차려 입었다.

말을 타고, 그는 basra 의 도시 근처에 도달했다.

한 노인이 거리를 따라서 혼자 걸어가고 있었다. 

어디로 가는 중이요?

Basra 도시로 가고 있습니다.

내가 당신을 거기까지 데려다 주겠소. 나의 말을 타시오.

감사합니다. (혼자 중얼거리면서) 음, 이 말은 매우 훌륭합니다.

당신을 여기에 내려 주겠어요.

아니오. 당신이 내리시오. 이것은 나의 말이오.

(당황해 하며) 머요? 내가 스스로 당신을 말에 태워 주지 않았나요?

예, 그러나 누가 아나요? 우리 둘 다 이곳에서는 낯선 사람들이오.

(혼잣말하며)만약 내가 이 도둑에게 약간의 돈을 준다면, 그는 나에게 말을 주겠지. 그러나 그 후에도 그는 다른 사람에게도 같은 식으로 부정한 짓을 하겠지.

만약 내가 판사에게 이 경우를 판단해 달라고 요청하면, 나는 그 판사가 어떻게 판결 하는지 알 수 있을 거야.

판사님, 저는 여기에서 멀리 떨어진 곳에서 온 여행객입니다.

저는 이 노인을 만났고 그를 저의 말에 태워서 이곳까지 데려다 주었습니다.

그러나, 지금 그는 거짓말을 하고 이 말이 그의 것이라고 말하고 있습니다.

(소리 지르면서) 이 말은 내 것이요. 내가 이 말이 새끼였을 때부터 길러 왔소.

이 말은 마치 나에게는 형제와 같소. 이 남자가 나의 말을 가지려 하고 있어요.

목격자가 있나요?

아니요, 재판관님.

그러면 이 말을 여기에 두고 가서 내일 오시오.

(남자에게 물어보면서) 왜 당신은 이 남자의 친절을 나쁜 방법으로 갚으려 했나요?

착한 여행객이여, 이 말은 당신 것입니다.

알려주십시오. 당신은 내가 이 말의 주인인지를 어떻게 아셨나요?

내가 당신의 말을 법정 근처에 있는 마굿간에 넣어 두었죠.

남자가 지나갈 때, 말은 결코 머리를 들지 않았소.

당신이 지나갈 때, 말은 큰 소리를 내었죠. 이제 당신 말입니다.

(놀라서)  당신은 현명한 판사이군요? 나는 왕이오.

내가 당신을 이 수도의 고등 법원 판사로 임명 하겠소.

Lesson 4 The Great Judge

Scene 1

One day a king dressed himself up as a traveler to journey through his country. 

Riding his horse, he came close to the city of Basra. 

An old man was walking along the street himself.

King: Where are you going?

Man: To the city of Basra.

King: I’ll take you there. Ride my horse.

Man: Oh, thank you. (talking to himself) Umm…. This horse is very nice.

Scene 2

In the city of Basra

King: I will leave you here.

Man: No, you get off. This is my horse!

King: (puzzled) What? Didn’t I myself give you a ride on this horse?

Man: Yes, but who knows? We are both strangers here.

King: (talking to himself) If I give the thief some money, he’ll let me have my horse, but then he’ll just cheat someone else the same way.

If I ask a judge to decide the case, I’ll find out how the judge makes a judgment.

Scene 3

In front of the judge

King: Your Honor, I am a traveler from a land a long way from here. 

I met this old man and brought him here on the back of my horse. 

However, now he lies and says that the horse is his.

Man: (crying out) The horse is mine. I have raised him since he was a baby horse. 

He is like a brother to me. This man is trying to take my horse.

Judge: Are there any witnesses?

King and Man: No, your Honor.

Judge: Then leave the horse and come back tomorrow.

Scene 4

The next morning

Judge: (asking the man) Why did you repay this man’s kindness with your bad ways? 

Good traveler, the horse is yours.

King: Tell me, how did you know that I was the owner of the horse?

Judge: I had your horse put in a stable next to the court. 

When the man passed by, the horse never looked up. 

When you passed, he made a loud sound. It is your horse.

King: (surprised) You are a wise judge! I am the king. 

I’ll make you the High Court Judge in the capital city!s!
