Lesson9 The Korean Language Around the World

 For his social studies class, Jisu did a project called "What makes me proud to be a Korean?" After doing some work on the topic, Jisu focused on the increasing popularity of the Korean language around the world. Now, listen to his presentation.

 Nowadays, it is becoming more common to hear about foreigners learning Korean. In fact, Korean is no longer just for Koreans. More and more people around the world are learning Korean. Some people learn Korean to study or work in Korea. Others learn it because they are interested in Korean popular culture such as Korean dramas and Korean pop songs.

 When people learn a new language, they want to test their proficiency. Korean learners can take the Test of Proficiency in Korean, also called TOPIK.

 The TOPIK is a test for people who are learning Korean as a foreign language. It started in 1997, and 2,274 people from four countries took the test that year. Since then, the number of people taking the test has grown every year. This shows that the interest in Korea and the Korean language is increasing.

 The Korean language is popular in many countries, as you will see if you visit a TOPIK test center. Test centers are busy with people who want to take the test. The TOPIK is a test for people who are learning Korean as a foreign language. One day, I visited a test center. There, I found many test takers who were reviewing last minute details so as not to fail the test. They spoke many different languages such as English, Russian, French, and Japanese. After the test, I interviewed a Korean language learner form China. She said that she started to study it to understand Korean dramas better.

 Later, however, she came to have another goal - to get a better job. A high score on the TOPIK is helpful in getting a good job even in China.
